A Way Home

With my family in one country and my best friends in another, I found myself constantly calculating time zones and craving familiar connections. I was homesick, and finding activities to do outside my routine helped give me a sense of belonging, and carve out a place in Atlanta that I can call home. To explore this concept further, this project called "A Way Home," took the form of an interactive data visualization website.

A Way Home - Research

Over a span of 5 weeks, I meticulously tracked my phone calls, moods, activities done outside my routine, and the frequency of checking time zones on a daily basis. The aim was to collect data to enhance my self-understanding and present the gathered information in a fun and comprehensible visual format.

“A Way Home” represents an overview of my experience being away from home, and my attempts to stay connected with people I miss while building a life on the other side of the world.

The infographic represents an interaction between overall and fluctuating moods through the day, homesickness, doing activities outside my daily routine to make me feel at home, and the international & domestic calls I make across a period of 5 weeks.

The website also offers an extra feature where users can generate a personalized digital postcard containing the infographic of a particular day. This addition aims to foster conversations and forge stronger bonds with distant loved ones. The infographic provides a concise overview of the day, along with additional details, making it an enjoyable read for a loved one.
